No, he didn't made a statement about it but I can tell it's different from his previous work. His previous work are more obvious that it's BL (boys love) so I'm sure he actually doesn't want it to be BL this time
Also, with all the teasing for sexual tension between the Papa and Potato, I'm surprised the author is upset with fans shipping them. Why tease and advertise if you don't want fans going that way? The author isn't upset that people shipping them. He kinda let them be. He never say anything. I think he wants people to think whatever they want as shipping them or not has nothing to do with the storyline.
